1 Run Games

Let's talk about the 6 and 18 record in 1 run games. Think about it, a 12 and 12 (.500) record makes up the 5 game lead that the Mets have and puts the Phils in first.

Bombing teams out gives the Phils the lead in runs scored but accomplishes little beyond that. You can point to bad managing, bad execution, whatever, it doesn't change the fact that the Phils record in 1 run games is the difference maker, especially when the Mets ar 14 and 6.

records in one run games alot of the time amount to luck. One year you could be great in 1 run games, the next year you could have same team and suck in 1 run games. Heck look at the Nationals like 3 years ago they were in 1st I think at the all star break all because they won like 15 1 run games in a row. Then in the second half of the season they couldn't buy a 1 run win and sunk in the standings as a result.

Who cares about the Nats? I'm talking about the team in front of the Phils. This is the second year in a row where the most meaningful difference between the teams is 1 run games. Take a look at the breakdown last year. Someone did great research:

It's the manager and also a lack of clutch hitting from a team that is great when it's a blowout.

I think it's the manager and bullpen. Charlie probably is costing this team more than most managers would. He seems to consistently make the wrong choices like letting Moyer hit the other night, bunting Rowand (even though they won that one) and the worst of the worst: bringing in a new pitcher before Restovich was announced for the Nats earlier this year. That one definitely cost them a win.

As I've continued to say. Want to see what kind of manager you have, check out your record in 1 run games. .500 isn't bad, it could be better, but to be 6-18, along with how bad they were last year is indicative of a manager bad at strategy, bad at putting his players in the best position to succeed.

Our record in this category would also improve if Charlie wan't making the decisions.

Didn't they show a stat a week or so ago that we were 1-25 when we don't score over 2 or 3 runs (I forget which)?

What wins one run games? The bullpen and contact hitting, this team has neither.

motor Looks scared out there.

How's the Phils' record in games decided in the winning team's last at-bat? And the Mets'?

I'd also like to see their record when the final out is made with the tying run at the plate.

I read in a Leonard Koppett book about the Mets' history (I forget the title) where the 1962 Mets had something like 56 of their 120 losses end with the tying run in the batter's box. Since the '62 Amazin's won 40 games, they had 96 games (60% of the 160 games played; they had two un-made-up rainouts) where they either a) won or b) lost, but had the potential of extending the game with one swing of the bat, at the moment the final pitch was released, i.e., dreams of victory in their minds and those of their fans.

One-run games don't always give a total explanation of performance in close games, but they're easiest. And remember, if you're the home team, a walk-off-style win can be by as much as four runs.

They're first in the league in batting average, so I'd have to disagree with half your point.
