From throwing up in the Super Bowl to sit ups in the driveway, 2005 was a year to forget for the Eagles.
But after losing a heartbreaker in the Super Bowl, it was going to be the year the Eagles got to the big game, and win it.
Well, not so fast.
From right after the Super Bowl things were out of sort for the defending NFC Champions. Terrell Owens fired his long time agent and friend David Joseph and hired Super agent and shark Drew Rosenhaus. What followed was something of the likes we have never seen before.
The All-Pro receiver began to lob grenades at the organization and more importantly quarterback Donovan McNabb. What only a season earlier was a match made in heaven, turned into a couple headed straight for divorce.
He also skipped Mini-camp and was suspended during training camp, which laid the groundwork for a circus like atmosphere that haunted the team all season.
The distraction caused by Owens clearly affected the team, but it was only a small part of why the 2005 season failed.
The season opened with an NFC Championship Game rematch with the Atlanta Falcons, which was a foreshadowing of what was to come. Pro Bowl MLB Jerimiah Trotter was ejected before game even started and it symbolized a season that was all wrong.
The Eagles struggled and lost to the Falcons and Donovan McNabb was injured and was never again healthy for the rest of the year.
There were some highlights as the Birds staged an amazing second half comeback in Kansas City and stunned the Chargers with a blocked field goal and return for a touchdown at a crazed Lincoln Financial Field.
On the flip side, the team suffered embarrassing losses in Dallas and Denver. The offense was clearly struggling and the Owens time bomb was getting ready to explode.
As the Eagles were getting ready for a game in Washington, it finally happened. Owens in an ESPN interview again ripped McNabb and the organization and was suspended for the rest of the season.
From that point on the season was officially a disaster. McNabb continued to struggle before finally calling it a season after throwing the game and season away with an interception by Roy Williams on Monday night.
After that the Eagles were stuck with the likes of Mike McMahon, Koy Detmer and Reno Mahe. The season mercifully ended with another loss to Washington.
There were a few bright spots to give a glimmer of hope for 2006. Reggie Brown showed he could be a quality receiver. Ryan Moats and Bruce Perry showed flashes of what could be a three-headed monster in the Birds backfield. Trent Cole was a force on the defensive line and should be a contributor next season.
One year removed from the most exciting time in franchise history the team is at a crossroads. The once feared Eagle defense was shredded. The lack of a pass rush, the sub-par play of the linebackers not named Trotter and the shockingly poor play from a Pro Bowl secondary, are all reason for concern.
An offense that only a year earlier had dominated the league with big play after big play was nothing more than a dink and dunk team. Minus Owens, there were flashbacks of James Thrash, Charles Johnson and Torrance Small. Brian Westbrook had an up and down season before getting hurt and the offensive line is a reason for great concern.
Andy Reid has a lot to evaluate and the evaluation needs to start with him. Reid has been very successful, but the 2005 season was a disaster and he is a major reason why. From letting the likes of Corey Simon and Derrick Burgess walk to the Owens situation and his insistence to throw the ball 80 % of the time with an injured QB. Reid had a year to forget and for this team to get back to the top Reid needs to make the necessary changes.
As the coach would say, "The time is yours...."
