CLEARWATER, FL - Coming into the 2005 season, the Clearwater Threshers and new manager Greg Legg were hoping for big things. So far, things have been anything but pretty.
Legg inherited a team that went just 55-81 under the command of Mike Schmidt. Last season, he managed the Reading Phillies to a 64-77 record in 2004.
The Threshers have a 3-12 record this season. In their last game they took a 5-2 lead going into the eight inning but gave up 5 runs to the Sarasota Reds and lost 7-5.
One of the biggest problems has been error, with the team committing 18 in the last 14 games. Another has been the bullpen losing leads for their starters.
Despite their record, some players have shown some signs of promise. Second baseman Tim Moss (.300, 9 RBI, 2 HR) is one of a few hitters swinging the bat well and has played excellent defense.
Left fielder Jake Blalock, (.260, 7RBI, 1 HR) has shown some signs of greatness but also has been inconsistent.
Right fielder Brad Correll, who was acquired as part of the Cory Lidle trade last season, is showing his potential batting .292 with 9 RBI’s and 3 doubles.
Zack Segovia (1-2, 3.25 ERA) has been pitching very well this season. He earned a loss in his first start, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 1 earned run in 8 innings. He rebounded and went 1-1 in his last two starts with one of those losses due to lack of run support.
Scott Mathieson (0-1, 3.24 ERA) also had a rough first start, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits, 3 earned runs, in 6 innings pitched. His next two starts were well enough to earn him wins but the bullpen failed him.
In the bullpen, Beau Richardson (0.00 ERA) and Francisco Butto (3.00 ERA) have both been pitching well. Richardson has only appeared in two games but has been pitching well.
Butto has been the teams closer and also pitching well.
Both were expected to head up north to Double-A Reading but were stopped due to off-season signings.
The Threshers start a three-game series against the Fort Meyers Miracle on Sunday.
