Happ is nice bat and has another year of control and Benentendi would have been nice at the top of the order, but the Phils need defense there.

Multiple sources say Padres currently have best offer on the table for Juan Soto.
When healthy, a trio of Soto-Tatis-Machado would be ... fairly effective.

If the Giants continue to fade and/or become sellers, it really clarifies that Phillies' wild-card chances. They'd basically be battling the second-place NL Central team (Brewers or Cardinals) for that final slot.

No way that they sell with the deadline in just 5 days
A few weeks ago, I thought it would take 90 for the 3rd WC spot, but their struggles will hopefully bring it closer to 86

Obviously they have the deepest pockets in baseball, but I'm not sure they have the prospects/talent to put together a winning package for Ohtani.

that would be highly annoying. imagine getting a front line starter and hitter in one player.

Related: Ohtani is making $5.5 million this year.
There's a good argument to be made that you should just move the decimal point and his value as a hitter/pitcher puts him at $55 million per season.
Thus the talks for his next contract could start around 8/440.
More likely, a smart team like the Dodgers (or a couple others) would likely just try to go higher on the AAV and get the rest of his peak years: 3/180? 4/240?

Mariners trade 2 top 50 prospects + 2 others for Luis Castillo
