Signs seem to be pointing to Juan Soto going to the Padres.

One interesting one to watch today is Cubs C Willson Contreras. I think the Mets are hoping to land him, and he'd be a big addition, but other clubs are in the running too.

If Padres indeed land Soto, watch for Dodgers to respond with some out-of-left-field blockbuster.

Not sure I take the current version of Syndergaard over Ranger Suarez.

Pass.

If Syndergaard is it, then what a shame. Dombrowski comes here and suddenly starts hugging prospects

While you have be careful, because Syndergaard was in a 6-man rotation, I think the way to view this is:

-- It gets Bailey Falter out of the rotation for the final 2 months
-- Syndergaard is likely to be better than Gibson

Nola-Wheeler-Suarez-Syndergaard-Gibson gives them a good chance to pitch their way into the playoffs, at which point you hope the whole offense is clicking.

That said, I'd prefer Mahle, though the rumored price of O'Hoppe & McGarry is tough to swallow

The package going back to Washington for Juan Soto and Josh Bell, sources tell ESPN:

- LHP MacKenzie Gore
- OF Robert Hassell III
- SS C.J. Abrams
- OF James Wood
- RHP Jarlin Susana
- one more major league player

That's the only holdup right now to the agreed-upon deal.

Padres who are 2 games better than the Phillies added Soto, Hader, and Bell.

Phillies are telling everyone they aren’t trading any of their top 5 prospects.

I guess when you have the chance to wait until Bryce Harper is 34 to go all in, you gotta do it.

Like to me if you sign Castellanos, and Schwarber to go with Harper and Realmuto. You have a healthy Wheeeler and Nola.

You just have to go for it sorry. Otherwise what is the actual point.

This is the time they should be going for it

You're right that it doesn't appear they're going for it in any significant way. We'll know soon.

As far as Soto is concerned, the Phillies' bad drafting and player development made that acquisition impossible. Even something along the lines of Abel-Painter-O'Hoppe-Stott-Bohm doesn't top Padres' offer.

What it must feel like to have "ammunition" without thinking you are back to a 60 win team in 3 years with total lack of farm development.

Agree with the lack of talent in the system - at this point though- those vets need to win now.
